10 Earth Day Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

1. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970
2. It wasn’t always called Earth Day. Originally, it was called Ecology Day or E-Day.
3. Earth Day was announced shortly after Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin saw firsthand the damages that occurred during the Santa Barbara oil spill. It is, to this day, still ranked as the 3rd largest oil spill.
4. The first Earth Day demonstration was one of the largest demonstrations with over 1,500 college campuses participating.

5. The official date was picked because it fell in between spring break and final exams and organizers wanted to maximize student involvement.
6. Part of the original demonstrations were mass phone-ins to industrial polluters.

7. About 1 billion people participate globally in Earth Day festivities.

8. In 2011, people planted 28 million trees in Afghanistan as a part of the “Plant Trees, Not Bombs” campaign

9. According to Friends of The Earth, humans today use 50% more natural resources than we did 30 years ago.

10. Just a few short years ago in 2019, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded the hottest year on record, just behind 2016,
